Florida Winter Annuals

The Winter is Coming!

But don’t fret! Down here in the sunshine state we have many flowers and plants that thrive this time of year.

In Florida, we’re lucky to have plants that bloom throughout the year. This includes flowers that are typically planted throughout the summer in different regions that can be planted in the winter here.

Popular winter annuals include pansies and violas, each of which have edible flowers. Snapdragons, petunias, and alyssum are other well-liked winter choices.

But just because we have a climate that allows for blooming doesn’t mean that there’s no care that must go into them. Having success with your blooming plants in Florida’s winter months takes a bit of preparation. Having the right plants for your land in the right place with the right conditions will ensure your garden’s success.

There are a few key points to keep in mind if you want healthy blooming plants in the ‘off season’.

  1. Soil
    • Your soil should be built up with organic matter. This will add and help retain the nutrients needed to produce blooms.
  2. Fertilizer
    • Setting your plants up with a slow-release fertilizer or a weekly regiment of fertilization to the roots from an organic compost mixture will make your plants stay very happy.
  3. Water
    • Regular watering is vital in our dry winter. The Sunshine state’s driest time of the year.

Another item of importance is placing winter annuals in full sun and making sure to Deadhead. Deadheading, or removing old blooms, will keep your blooming plants setting new buds.

Following these simple steps can help you really add some striking visuals to your mid-winter yard or property. If you need any help with your landscaping maintenance, give us a call at (866) 720 – 8822 Today!
